Visa USA and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Launch Data Security Seminars for Merchants
Visa
and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will conduct a series of data security
seminars for small and mid-sized businesses. The series, which is
entitled “Securing our Businesses, Protecting our Customers,” will take place in 12 cities across the country through August 2006.
These merchant security seminars underscore the shared responsibility
of all card-accepting businesses to combat fraud. Specifically, Visa
and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will:
Educate
retailers on how they can better protect their businesses against
payment card fraud and comply with the PCI data security requirements.
Favorably impact the industry’s reputation among merchants.
Reassure cardholders that Visa and businesses are taking action to protect their card information.
As your merchant advocate, Global Payments provides information on ways
you can help prevent fraudulent activities and avoid becoming a victim
of fraud. Be aware that Global Payments will never send a
representative unannounced to visit your location for any type of
maintenance or repair to your payment card terminal or PC. Never allow
anyone to use, update or alter your terminal at any time, unless
specifically known and authorized by you in advance. Visit the Global Payments’ Web site for additional information about combating fraud.

SWIPE CARDS TO HELP REDUCE FRAUD AND COSTLY CHARGEBACKS
Cards are often damaged on purpose, forcing you to manually enter the number in the point-of-sale terminal. This bypasses many anti-fraud features of a card, as the magnetic stripe information cannot be transmitted to the verification center for authorization.
To help protect against fraud, swipe every card presented for payment. Make sure the card number and the number appearing on the terminal match. If swiping the card doesn’t work and you key the transaction, make sure to check the card’s security features and take an imprint of the card. Then, collect the customer’s signature. When in doubt always call for authorization. By performing these simple steps, you can help reduce your chargeback costs.
You and your staff are the best defense against fraud and should educate yourselves about potential fraudulent activities. For more information on other ways to prevent fraud, visit the Global Payments Web site at www.globalpaymentsinc.com.
