Customer-Not-Present
Customer-Not-Present transactions are where the cardholder is not physically at the location when payment is taken. This is usually done either online or by telephone/fax.
- Online, the cardholder enters his/her card details directly into a Web site directly, or through a third party payment service
- By telephone, where a cardholder either keys in (IVR) or provides his/her card details to an operator who manually keys the information into a payment solution.
- By fax, where the cardholder faxes a completed payment form to the merchant.
Customer-Not-Present transactions often require additional security questions or processes to
avoid fraud.
Internet Solutions
HSBC Merchant Services Fully Integrated Solution – An end to end credit and debit card processing solution, allowing you to take card payments from your customers directly on your Web site. It is a highly versatile system, which allows you to integrate the required functionality directly into your own systems and provides your customers with a seamless shopping experience.
HSBC Merchant Services Partly Integrated Solution – This solution allows you to take orders for goods and services directly on your Web site, once your customer has finished adding items into their shopping basket they will be transferred to HSBC Merchant Services' server to complete his/her card payment. This has the benefit of showing that you are linked to HSBC Merchant Services and therefore offers your customer additional peace of mind. Once the payment is complete, your customer is transferred back to your site.
Both solutions provide you with access to the user interface which allows you to view completed orders, view historic data and review transactions that have been flagged for your attention.

Mail Order/Telephone Order Solutions
HSBC Merchant Services online payment entry solution – provides you with access to an HSBC Merchant Services hosted Web page, this allows you to process transactions by manually entering the card payments details, whilst the cardholder is still on the telephone or from mail/fax orders.
You will have access to a user interface providing you with the ability to view transaction details (count, value and totals), to review the status of each order processed, monitor declined or exception transactions and check what orders you have pending.

Payment Service Providers (PSPs)
Payment Service Providers (PSPs) – are companies who can act as your agent, either providing you with the ability to accept card payments and/or forwarding them on to us for authorisation and processing. They may also be able to assist in designing and hosting your Web site. If you choose a PSP to process your card transactions we must give you our prior written approval.
Multi-Currency
There are two methods for undertaking currency transactions:
- if you want to accept payments over the internet or by mail or telephone order, we recommend that you use our Secure ePayments service.
- Alternatively, you can develop your own equipment to meet your specific currency requirements. We will provide you with technical help and advice, system specifications and an approval process to make sure your equipment meets our requirements.
We can arrange for you to accept payment in a selection of foreign currencies, including Euro and US Dollars. You can choose to have all your currency transactions credited directly to a nominated foreign currency account held with HSBC Bank plc, or to any sterling account.
If you choose to have your transactions credited to a sterling account, transaction amounts will be converted on the date of the transaction. If you choose to have your charges debited from a sterling account the charges will be converted on the date of collection. In each case, the exchange rate applied will be the daily spot exchange rate of HSBC Bank plc. We will provide details of the rate on request.
You can accept MasterCard Credit, Visa Credit, Debit MasterCard, Visa Debit, Visa Electron, V PAY and International Maestro debit cards to undertake sales and refunds.
