Prague, 23 November 2006 – 7.2 million consumers that own a mobile telephone with a prepaid card can enjoy a simpler life from today. Starting today, consumers can easily top up mobile phone credit for themselves or their friends in Globus hypermarkets while shopping, regardless of whether they are paying in cash or by credit card. The new method of topping up mobile telephones was presented today by representatives of Globus hypermarkets, all three mobile operators and Global Payments Europe.
"Globus, as usual, is bringing its customers new products that make shopping easier and more pleasant. Whereas ten years ago Globus was the first hypermarket in the Czech Republic, today it is the first hypermarket where, whilst paying, consumers can top up the credit on their mobile phone. Customers can choose from a chain of eleven Globus hypermarkets in the Czech Republic, which have a total of 550 cash registers.” said Boris Malý, head of marketing and corporate development at Globus Czech Republic
“The concept of topping up mobile phones through various top-up channels – ATM, POS terminals and directly from a mobile phone – was developed in the former MUZO a.s. at the end of the 1990s. We brought top-ups through ATM and mobile telephones into operation starting in 2001. Now, thanks to the specific interest and close co-operation with Globus ČR, and the traditionally good co-operation with all mobile operators, we can finally bring into operation also the third prepared top-up channel – POS terminals,” said Petr Sedlácek, director general of Global Payments Europe, which provides the GP mobile top-up service.
Mobile telephones with prepaid cards are still very popular with Czech consumers – at the current time mobile operators have more than 7.24 million. Consumers mostly use on-line methods of topping up phones, for example in ATM, GSM banking or at Sazka terminals, and their popularity keeps on rising. It can therefore be expected that the top-up service on POS terminals in a retail network will also be very popular.
“The whole top-up process is very simple. Whilst the checkout operator is counting the items to be purchased, the customer asks for the credit on his mobile phone to be topped up, by CZK 200, CZK 300 or CZK 500. He can input the number of the phone to be topped up on the terminal himself and the amount is added to the items he is purchasing. The whole transaction is confirmed by the sending of a text message to the number of the topped up telephone,” explained Bohdan Tetiva, product marketing director at Telefónica O2 Czech Republic.
“There will only be a gap of a few seconds between the confirmation of the top-up transaction at the terminal and the actual topping up. It is one of the fastest and easiest ways to top-up credit that consumers can use at the moment,” said Martin Horcicka, key services marketing director at Vodafone Czech Republic.
“The new method of topping up credit will not only be simple, fast and comfortable for customers, but also advantageous. Until the end of January each customer who takes advantage of the mobile phone top-up service in the T-Mobile and O2 networks at a Globus hypermarket checkout will get an additional 10% top-up,” added Jan Roule, Product & Terminal Management director at T-Mobile Czech Republic.
